Inse Rail to supervise the works to extend siding tracks to 750 meters in three stations in Córdoba

ADIF has awarded INSE RAIL, in a joint venture, the contract for the supervision of the works of the projects to increase the length of the siding tracks in the Fernán Núñez, Montilla and Puente Genil stations to 750 m. These stations are part of the conventional gauge L/430 Córdoba Mercancías – Los Prados line, which connects the provinces of Córdoba and Malaga.

INSE RAIL also drafted the project for the three stations.

These actions are aimed at achieving the conformity of the stations and to allow the parking and crossing of trains up to 750 meters long. The extension of these siding tracks will improve the capacity, efficiency and competitiveness of the line, helping reduce external and internal costs of freight transport.

The works consist of the extension of the platform, the refurbishment of the old platform in the platform area and the installation of the track on the extended route. The extended tracks will also be electrified and the catenary in the stations will be adapted to equip them with rigid frames. The drainage system will also be adapted to the new track configuration.

In addition, the existing overpass in the Montilla station will be replaced with a longer one.

ADIF awards Inse Rail the contract for the supervision of the works to renovate the infrastructure and track between the Redondela and Vigo stations

Inse Rail, in a joint venture with the company Ofiteco, has been awarded the contract to supervise the works of the construction project for the comprehensive overhaul of infrastructure and track in the section connecting the Redondela and Vigo-Guixar stations, in the province of Pontevedra, on the Monforte de Lemos – Chapela Split line.

This action is aimed at upgrading and optimizing one of the region’s most important railway lines, which will improve the capacity, efficiency and reliability of the route to the benefit of both passengers and freight transport.

The action includes renovation of the track on the route by installing sleepers, ballast and new and improved turnouts, and adapting it for the future upgrading of the line’s electrification.

In the Chapela neighborhood, a new stop with a 220 m platform will be built close to a parking lot, with a pedestrian walkway over the tracks. This will improve the mobility conditions for citizens and better integrate the railway into the surrounding area.

A new central platform longer than the existing platform will be built in the Redondela station, and the rest of the platforms will be expanded. All of the platforms will be connected with a new underpass. 

At the Vigo-Guixar station, Adif will install new and improved turnouts and will extend the platform at the head of the tracks to allow arrivals and departures of trains longer than 600 m. 

The project also includes actions in the Vigo tunnel – from the reinforcement of the waterproofing, tunnel lining and drainage, to the adaptation of the tunnel gauge for new electrification in the future – and with improvements to embankments, cuts, drainage and other elements of the line.

This action is another advance in Adif’s plan, with an investment of 265 million euros, to upgrade the entire Ourense-Vigo Guixar line, or ‘Miño Line’, which includes the Guillarei-Portuguese border connection. This will adapt the line to the parameters of the Atlantic Corridor, strengthen the connection with Portugal, and increase the capacity for both passenger and freight traffic.

Inse Rail to design the la Robla railway freight terminal with a connection to the RFIG (General Interest Railway Network) for Reolum

REOLUM, a Spanish company specializing in integrated solutions for decarbonization and the energy transition, has awarded Inse Rail the contract to draft the construction project for the railway freight terminal with a connection to the RFIG (General Interest Railway Network) that will be part of the ‘La Robla Green’ project in La Robla, León.

“Robla Green” will be one of the largest renewable methanol plants in Europe with an investment of more than 700 million euros. The facility, with a production capacity of 140,000 tons per year, will combine biogenic carbon from a biomass cogeneration plant with renewable hydrogen to produce e-methanol.

Inse Rail’s president, honored at the Fundación Caminos 2024 awards

The Fundación Caminos, in collaboration with the Professional Association of Civil Engineers, presented the Fundación Caminos 2024 Awards at an exciting gala held on May 9th at the Teatro Real in Madrid.

At the event, with more than 3,000 people in attendance, the president of the Senate presented Inserail’s president, César Cañedo-Argüelles with the Ad Honorem Mention for Professional Career, for his 59 years an engineer and businessman in the engineering sector.

The gala was attended by a large group of representatives of different government institutions, including Pedro Rollán, President of the Senate, Óscar Puente, Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, as well as the new Secretary General of Land Transport, and the President of ADIF, along with other senior government officials and representatives from the engineering sector’s most important entities and corporate associations.

Inse Rail presents its GALIBRAIL application to ADIF

On Wednesday, March 26th, the GALIBRAIL application was presented to ADIF’S Department of Conventional Network Projects.

Aware of the growing problems in Conventional Network projects in general, and more specifically in Rolling Highway and metric gauge network projects, INSE RAIL has developed a tool that calculates the clearances defined in OFOM 1630/2015 for the UIC, Iberian and metric gauges, and even Rolling Highway clearances.

Its main advantages are time and cost savings to define clearances, more reliable calculations and integration with other 3D modeling programs and the BIM ecosystem in general.

The presentation ended with an interesting debate on the application, and was closed by our President, César Cañedo-Argüelles.

Inse Rail to supervise the works to adapt the Madrid-Zaragoza stretch to the Rolling Highway

Inse Rail, as part of a joint venture, has been awarded the contract to supervise the works to adapt the Madrid-Zaragoza stretch to the Rolling Highway (RH) of the Algeciras-Zaragoza route.

The RH is a cargo transport service that loads highway trailers or semi-trailers, using specialized cars. The initiative offers a competitive and collaborative logistics solution that significantly reduces both external costs and GHG emissions. Highway transport emits 4.7 times more GHGs than rail (annual savings: 620,000 tn CO2).

The work consists of adapting the railway loading gauge of tunnels and overpasses to the dimensions required for the semi-trailers that will use the RH service between Madrid and Zaragoza.  This will require the modification of 40 overpasses and 26 tunnels on the conventional-gage line between the provinces of Madrid, Guadalajara, Soria and Zaragoza.

This will involve modification of the infrastructure, such as the expansion of the tunnel cross-sections and lowering of the platform, as well as changes to the superstructure, including renovation of sleepers, rails and ballast, as well as drainage and electrification work. 

The framework of the actions between Madrid and Zaragoza to develop the Rolling Highway also includes extending the siding tracks of the Épila, Morés, Paracuellos-Sabiñán, Arcos de Jalón, Sigüenza, Jadraque, and Humanes de Mohernando stations to a length of 750 m.

This will make it possible to park trains and allow trains of interoperable lengths to cross, increasing the capacity, efficiency and competitivity of the line to promote railway transport of freight.

The implementation of the Algeciras-Zaragoza RH service will be crucial to increase the share of railway transport on the central branch of the Mediterranean Corridor as well as on the Atlantic Corridor. It will also strengthen intermodality on the Iberian Peninsula with traffic between Europe and Morocco.

The Algeciras-Zaragoza route will carry 6 trains per day (three in each direction) with trucks to/from Morocco, in addition to 2 trains per day (one each way) from Huelva to Zaragoza, with trucks to/from the Canary Islands and the area around Huelva; and another 4 trains per day (two each way) Sevilla-Zaragoza, with truck to/from the Port of Sevilla and Andalusia.

This means that each day, approximately 12,000 train-km will be covered, and approximately 360 trucks will be carried on this route, avoiding 360,000 km of highway truck traffic per day.   

The services of the Algeciras-Zaragoza RH will continue from Zaragoza to Tarragona, through Lleida. This stretch connects the Main production and consumption nodes of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid and Barcelona, and forms part of the flow between the center and south, and northeast Spain and the rest of Europe. 

These actions will help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8, which is aimed at promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth; and SDG 9, whose aims include the development of reliable, sustainable, resilient and high quality infrastructure.

Inse Rail launches ACE FABRI, a new innovation program to determine the structural characteristics of masonry railway bridges

There is currently a need for more precise knowledge of the load limits of this type of bridge when supporting increasingly faster and heavier trains, which requires the adaptation of prevention technology to address these changes.

As a result of the unique characteristics of this type of bridge and their age, there has been a lack of interest in the development of modern techniques to facilitate their maintenance. Nevertheless, there are a considerable number of these bridges in service, with masonry bridges accounting for 45% of all of the railway bridges in Spain, and there is growing interest in them in terms of their historic value.

The project’s goal is to generate a new acoustic surveying methodology to assess the dynamic performance characteristics of masonry structures to make it possible to maintain stonework or brickwork railway structures.

Some of the specific scientific-technical goals include:

  1. Formulate proposed criteria to guide the selection of the optimum level of excitation, in addition to the preferred methodology for calibrating models, for the dynamic characterization of masonry bridges (optimum BiME)
  2. Validate a new procedure for two representative structures, using four levels of excitation and different EMA and OMA techniques for dynamic characterization.
  3. Determine whether or not level E4 dynamic excitation should be used, due to the appearance of some type of non-linear behavior.
  4. Determine whether or not the non-linear FEM-DEM models need to be adjusted to reproduce the dynamic structural behavior.
  5. Experimental testing to verify the proposal formulated to choose the optimum BiME.
  6. Propose equivalent linear models to predict the dynamic behavior of masonry bridges.
  7. Demonstrate the capacity for predictive analysis

The technical capabilities of the participants bring together INSE RAIL’s extensive experience in other projects in the industry, the research potential of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and the technological innovation of TRES and HAMERTEC.

Inse Rail awarded the contract to supervise the modernization works of the catenary of the metric-gage network in Cantabria

Adif will invest 14 million euros to modernize the catenary of the metric-gage network in Cantabria. This new action is part of the Plan de Cercanías, which will increase the reliability of the electrification systems, improve the response to potential incidents and facilitate maintenance tasks.

All the disconnect switches in the network’s catenary will be replaced, and they will also be integrated into a remote control system so that the devices can be monitored and controlled automatically. 

The work – which includes all the installation operations, integration of the equipment, supply, installation, configuration and commissioning – will be supervised by Inse Rail. 

Catenary disconnect switches are the devices that make it possible to mechanically separate an electrical circuit from its power supply, isolating it in a section or segment of the line. This makes it safe to work on the electrical network and makes it possible to isolate sections of the catenary in case of malfunctions so that trains can continue to travel over the rest of the network.

This action joins other initiatives related to the network’s electrification that are currently underway, such as the new substations in Santander, Virgen de la Peña (both in the project-design phase) and Requejada (under construction).

Inse Rail to design and supervise the works of Alstom’s new maintenance workshop in Santa Perpetua de Mogoda

Alstom will build its first railway maintenance workshop at the factory in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda (Barcelona), which is approaching saturation and needs to be expanded and transformed.

Inse Rail will be responsible for preparing the construction design and later supervision of the works of the second large-scale project since the factory first opened in 1993.

The new maintenance workshop will measure 21 meters wide by 115 meters long and will be arranged on a single level. The plant has 3 corridors created by installing 2 tracks on support pillars. It also includes a building that abuts the facade of the building, divided into two floors, measuring 65.7 m long and 8 m wide, and a one-story wing measuring 10.60 m. The ground floor will be used for the reception area and workshops and the spaces for offices and worker services (changing rooms, restrooms, etc.) will be located on the upper floor.

Inse Rail is a leading company in the design of railway workshops and maintenance bases. Some of its more important projects include the design of ADIF’s first workshop in the Madrid-Sur maintenance sub-base and the design for RENFE’s new Fuencarral II high-speed workshop and the expansions of the Self-propelled workshop and the Santa Catalina II maintenance base. It also provided Project Management for the construction and commissioning of the Medina maintenance workshop on the Haramain high-speed line in Saudi Arabia.

Inse Rail to supervise the comprehensive remodeling works of the Grisén railway station

Adif has awarded Inse Rail the contract to provide technical assistance in the supervision of the works to remodel and modernize the Grisén railway station on the Madrid-Zaragoza conventional-gage line, located in the Ribera Alta del Ebro region (Zaragoza).

The construction project for the remodel was designed by Inse Rail to expand the functionality and operation of the station’s layout to improve traffic performance and improve operating efficiency.

The comprehensive remodeling of the station, which has several siding tracks and an industrial siding for the Opel automobile factory, includes the overhaul of the track yard configuration and layout to increase the travel speed of passenger trains between Madrid and Navarra/Basque Country/La Rioja, and the reorganization of the tracks in the siding to extend the useful length of two of them (3A and 3B) to 750 m.  The platform will also be expanded to respond to the needs of the new track configuration and the structure over the Canal Imperial de Aragón will be prepared.

The work includes the installation of new elements (rails, sleepers and ballast) and trackside devices, the comprehensive modernization of the electrification system, and the relocation of the lighting installations. The platforms will also be raised, a new central platform will be created, the main platform next to the passenger building will be reconstructed, and a new underpass equipped with stairs and ramps will be built under the platforms.
