Inse Rail’s Design for ADIF High Speed’s New Madrid Maintenance Depot Moves into the Construction Phase

The detailed design developed by Inse Rail for ADIF High Speed’s new rolling stock maintenance depot at the Madrid South maintenance base has reached a new milestone with the launch of the construction tender, marking the transition from the engineering phase to project delivery for a strategic railway infrastructure.

With a tender budget of €90.4 million, the project will provide ADIF High Speed with a state-of-the-art maintenance facility for locomotives, track recording trains and other auxiliary railway vehicles, increasing maintenance capacity and improving the efficiency of railway infrastructure operations.

As the company responsible for the detailed design, Inse Rail delivered the engineering required to define a highly complex maintenance facility, integrating civil engineering, railway track systems, electrification, industrial facilities, architecture, site development and railway systems. The project includes a maintenance building equipped with internal tracks, inspection pits, overhead cranes, specialist workshops, logistics areas and technical facilities, together with new track yards, connections to both the conventional and high-speed rail networks, electrification, signalling and telecommunications systems, railway equipment, as well as drainage networks and auxiliary services.

The publication of the construction tender represents the completion of the engineering stage and the beginning of the execution phase of a project that will strengthen ADIF High Speed’s maintenance capabilities while enhancing the availability and reliability of the railway vehicles used to maintain Spain’s rail network.

With this project, Inse Rail continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner in the delivery of complex railway engineering projects, contributing to the modernisation, sustainability and operational efficiency of Spain’s railway infrastructure.

Inse Rail Awarded Technical Assistance Contract for ADIF on the Oviedo–Santander Railway Line

Inse Rail has been awarded the contract for the “Technical Assistance for the Monitoring and Supervision of the Rail Replacement Works on the Infiesto–Arriondas Section, between KP 361+700 and KP 383+344, of Line 770: Oviedo–Santander,” promoted by ADIF.

The project forms part of ADIF’s ongoing railway infrastructure renewal and modernization program for the conventional rail network, aimed at improving the reliability, safety, and operational quality of rail services along this section of northern Spain’s railway network.

The contract, with a duration of 14 months, includes the provision of technical assistance services for the monitoring and supervision of the rail replacement works. These services comprise technical oversight, quality control, schedule monitoring, and support for the coordination of construction activities within an operational railway environment.

The renewal of this section will enhance operating conditions, passenger comfort, and service reliability, while also optimizing the maintenance requirements of the railway infrastructure.

With this award, Inse Rail further strengthens its position in the field of railway engineering and technical assistance, reinforcing its participation in strategic projects for the modernization and improvement of the railway network managed by ADIF.

Inse Rail’s Design for the Valencia-Fuente de San Luis Intermodal Terminal Moves Closer to Operational Service

The first phase of the expansion and comprehensive refurbishment of the Valencia-Fuente de San Luis Intermodal Terminal has been successfully completed, preparing the facility to begin operations on the Iberian-gauge network. This milestone marks significant progress for a strategic project whose engineering and detailed design were developed by Inse Rail for ADIF.

With an investment of more than €45 million, the project will significantly increase the terminal’s operational capacity, strengthening its role as a key freight hub within the Mediterranean Corridor and the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The project developed by Inse Rail included the comprehensive design of the terminal’s expansion and modernisation, covering new intermodal tracks, railway infrastructure, electrification, signalling and telecommunications systems, as well as the associated logistics facilities and urban development required to improve the terminal’s operational efficiency.

The completion of this first phase represents an important step towards the full operation of the Valencia-Fuente de San Luis terminal and highlights Inse Rail’s contribution to the development of strategic railway infrastructure that supports more efficient, sustainable and competitive freight transport in Spain.

INSE RAIL awarded a technical assistance contract for electrification and remote control works on the metre-gauge railway network in Asturias.

INSE RAIL, as part of a joint venture (UTE), has been awarded the contract for “Technical assistance for the monitoring and control of the execution of the catenary section switch remote control and electrification projects on the Sotiello – Aboño branch line of the Metre-Gauge Network in Asturias”, promoted by ADIF.

The project forms part of the investments aimed at modernising the energy and railway electrification facilities of the metre-gauge network in Asturias, with the objective of improving the reliability, availability and management capacity of the railway electrical infrastructure.

The contract includes the provision of technical assistance services for the monitoring and control of the works associated with the implementation of remote control systems for catenary section switches, which will enable remote operation and centralised supervision of the electrification facilities, optimising response times in the event of incidents and improving network operating conditions.

Likewise, the actions include works related to the electrification of the Sotiello – Aboño branch line, incorporating the electrical installations and associated systems required to guarantee the operability and continuity of railway services in an active operating environment.

The works carried out by the joint venture will include technical construction supervision, quality control, planning follow-up, coordination of interfaces between railway systems, and support for the supervision of safety and operational conditions during the execution of the works.

With this award, INSE RAIL strengthens its experience in railway projects related to electrification, energy and facility control, consolidating its position in the field of engineering and technical assistance for complex railway infrastructures managed by ADIF.

Expansion of Atocha Cercanías Capacity Progresses with the Participation of INSE RAIL

Since May 2024, INSE RAIL has been providing technical assistance services for the supervision and monitoring of the works related to the implementation of the new 4+4+2 railway scheme at Atocha Cercanías station, a strategic project promoted by Adif to increase capacity and improve railway operations at Madrid’s main commuter rail hub.

As part of this project, Adif has recently started the construction of four new stabling tracks at the southern end of the station, intended for the parking and maintenance of high-capacity trains. The project also includes the execution of new railway connections, track switches, electrification works, signaling systems, and the adaptation of safety and communications facilities.

The new 4+4+2 scheme will increase the station’s operational flexibility, optimize traffic management, and strengthen the reliability and capacity of railway services at Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes, one of the busiest railway infrastructures in Spain.

With this contract, INSE Rail continues to strengthen its involvement in highly complex railway projects linked to the modernization and improvement of the national railway network.

Inse Rail to draft the project for track dismantling in the integration of Sant Feliu de Llobregat

ADIF has taken a new step towards completing the integration of the railway in Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Baix Llobregat) with the award of the contract to draft the project for the dismantling of the track and the railway installations that will be out of service after the underground route has been implemented.

The project will eliminate the last remaining traces of the railway on the surface where it passes through the city center.

The scope of project covers about three kilometres of the L’Hospitalet de Llobregat–Vilafranca del Penedès–Sant Vicenç de Calders line, coinciding with the existing surface route. This is one of the final phases of one of the most important projects that Adif is currently executing in Rodalies, aimed at definitively reuniting the city and eliminating a historical barrier between its two halves.

The contract execution is expected to take 30 months and will be developed in two phases: phase one to draft the project, which will define the dismantling of all disused railway installations, including the removal of the provisional station and other associated structures, and phase two, focused on the preparation of reports during the construction phase.

Inse Rail to participate in the drafting of the construction projects to improve and renovate the Castejón-Logroño section through La Rioja

The contract is divided into three lots that correspond to the sub-sections defined in the informational study approved in 2024: Rincón de Soto, Alcanadre and Logroño.

Adif has awarded Inse Rail, in a joint venture with two other engineering companies, the Alcanadre subsection, where a variant of the route with double track has been planned.

The projects will define all the necessary actions to adapt the existing railway corridor, a 70.5 km section of electrified conventional-gage single track, to increase the maximum design speeds from 140 km/h to 200-220 km/h to reduce travel times from 48 minutes to half an hour.

The projects will include the comprehensive renovation of the track, treatment of trenches and embankments, adaptation of drainage systems, actions on the bridges that require it and the elimination of the 13 existing grade crossings on the route.

In addition, 750-meter siding tracks will be installed in the Calahorra and Arrúbal stations, which will make the infrastructure more versatile and will be especially beneficial for freight traffic.

This action is part of the protocol signed by the Ministry of Transport, Adif and the Government of La Rioja in 2020 to improve rail connections for both passengers and freight in the region.

Inse Rail awarded the contract to provide technical assistance for the comprehensive maintenance of track superstructure of Metro de Madrid (Lot 2)

Metro de Madrid has awarded Inse Rail, in a joint venture with the company GIS, one of the three lots opened for tenders for the comprehensive conservation of the track superstructure and drainage elements along the 300 kilometers of the metro network.

According to the action plan, the works will begin in the coming months and will run for four years. The purpose of the maintenance of the approved track superstructure is to guarantee the levels and parameters of safety in travel, improve the reliability and durability of the network condition and increase passenger comfort, quality and satisfaction.

The planned work includes tunnels, auxiliary facilities, as well as large structures in stations. The tasks will be carried out at night and will not disturb the usual service.

The main actions to be carried out are:

  • Replacement of the existing track system, which uses a concrete base and prefabricated blocks, with a bonded baseplate system, maintaining the track geometry.
  • Correction of geometric defects of warping in slab track.
  • Evaluation of trackside devices.
  • Supervision of the maintenance of trackside and expansion device

ADIF awards Inse Rail the supervision of the works to renovate the safety installations of the Peñalajo-Espeluy section, line 400

The contract, which was awarded to Inse Rail in a joint venture with two other companies, covers a stretch of 94 kilometers that falls entirely within the provinces of Ciudad Real and Jaén. It is part of Line 400 (Alcázar de San Juan – Cádiz) of the General Interest Railway Network (RFIG). This section includes several stations and stops that handle medium and long distance trains of Renfe Operadora, as well as freight traffic.

Over the next few years, a variety of actions that are currently in the project or planning phase will be carried out, including the extension of sidings with to 750 meters at different points. Much of the route will be also be integrated into the future Algeciras-Zaragoza rolling highway, which increase traffic significantly and will require infrastructure with greater capacity and improved reliability.

The section currently has 36 interlockings that use various technologies. Many of these – especially those with free cabling and geographical groups – use obsolete technology that is incompatible with future track modifications that will be required for the planned expansion projects.

The renovation includes the installation of new state-of-the-art signaling equipment, along with the implementation of centralized control and command systems. All of the field equipment will be replaced, incorporating signals with LED lights, axle counters in stations, audio-frequency track circuits on the routes and an ASFA Digital protection system. All the existing switches in the stations will be replaced with electromechanical drives, including the turnouts that give access to the main tracks that are currently non-motorized.

The cab equipment will also be updated with the installation of state-of-the-art electronic interlocks (ENCE) in all stations. These systems will be located in new technical buildings, designed to house the signaling and communications rooms, which will allow a safer, more efficient operation prepared for the future growth of rail traffic.

ADIF awards Inse Rail the contract for the supervision of the works to renovate the infrastructure and track between the Redondela and Vigo stations

The project awarded by ADIF to Inse Rail, as part of a joint venture, will eliminate 12 grade crossings, increase the permeability of the infrastructure and minimize the possibility of flooding in the municipality, according to the informational study approved by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

After a preliminary analysis of construction solutions, the project will develop a railway bypass that will connect the Bilbao-Balmaseda and Santander-Bilbao lines, freeing up more than a kilometer of track through the city center and eliminating grade crossings. In addition, the existing stop in Aranguren will be replaced with a new one.

The project will also include actions on two railway bridges that cross the Cadagua River, near the Aranguren stop. One of these will be dismantled, and the span (space between piers) will be extended to increase its water capacity, integrating the improvements to the waterway planned by the Basque Water Agency (URA).

These operations will be carried out in coordination with the URA, which also carries out flood protection actions in the area, specifically from the shallows located near the Aranguren station track yard to the commercial area of the Baular neighborhood. 

The drafting of this project, as well as the later execution of the works by Adif, is part of the protocol signed by the Ministry of Transport, Adif, the Basque Water Agency and the Zalla City Council.
